Imatra Rapids
Imatra Rapids, or Imatrankoski, is a dramatic stretch of the Vuoksi River where tumbling water carves a rocky gorge just upstream from Lappeenranta. Though harnessed by a modern hydroelectric dam, the rapids retain a wild, watchable energy, especially at high water when the river roars under a stone bridge. Visitors stroll along wooden promenades, gaze from viewing platforms, and glimpse the historical fountain and the celebrated summer concerts that once drew Tsarist crowds. Expect striking photos, a sense of place at Finland’s border, and a powerful reminder of nature’s resilience.
