Amphitheatre of El Jem
The Amphitheatre of El Jem is a vast, remarkably well-preserved Roman arena in southern Tunisia, built in the 3rd century and capable of seating up to 35,000 spectators. Its monumental four-tiered arches, massive outer walls, and spacious central arena evoke the grandeur of imperial entertainment, rivaling the Colosseum in scale. Today you can wander the labyrinthine hypogeum beneath the arena, imagine gladiatorial spectacles, and explore a nearby museum with mosaics and artifacts. A UNESCO World Heritage site, it offers dramatic sunset views, flanked by desert plains and a charming Tunisian town nearby.
