FAQs about hotels in Tokyo

See It to Believe It!

The capital of Japan, Tokyo is a vast, teeming metropolis nestled between mountains and Tokyo Bay. It’s so huge that you’ll have to come to grips with public transport and maybe even experience being pushed onto a train. Yes, it does actually happen!

Get your bearings by ascending the Tokyo World Trade Center near the waterfront, and savor the fantastic views taking in the red-and-white Tokyo Tower and Shinkuju’s skyscrapers. North is Ueno, home to the best museums (including the Tokyo National Museum) and a large park bursting with cherry blossom in spring.

Equally tranquil are the Chiyoda Imperial Palace and Gardens, surrounded by water. Also in gardens is the Meiji Jingu Shinto shrine in Shibuya, a youthful district where neon abounds.

For more traditional Japanese culture, head to Asakusa whose Sensō-ji Buddhist temple is Tokyo’s oldest temple. Outdoor markets sell a variety of wares, though shopping in Tokyo is, of course, fantastic wherever you go.

Whether you stay in a Japanese ryokan, luxury Tokyo hotel or a hostel, don’t fly out of Tokyo Narita Airport or Haneda Airport without having tried sushi. Another Japanese institution is the sento (public bath) and onsen (hot springs bath) – a must try. Also incredibly popular are Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea, Asia’s 2 most visited theme parks.

    Excellent experiences on offer

Excellent experiences on offer Skytree was amazing, some destinations are overrated like SHIBUYA crossing Ginza and akihabara venture a little to enjoy culture more, loved the train accessibility !! Exciting city with lots to see and do lots of local great eateries if you are willing to give it a go. Language is not a barrier anywhere everyone is helpful.

I'm not really a fan of Tokyo, probably because it is too busy and crowded for me. But if it's your first time to Japan of course you need to get there. My advice is to avoid being there in the summer as the hot and humid weather could be unbearable and beat any motivation for outdoor activities. However, mid May to mid June is the hydrangea season, which could be a redeeming point. I highly recommend taking a day trip from Tokyo to Kamakura or Yokohama to make the most of your time in Japan. Some also suggest a day trip to Yamanashi to view Mount Fuji but personally I don't think it's worth it, because it's hard to predict the weather and you need a clear sky in the morning to see the mountain. You have a better chance if you stay in Yamanashi overnight.

35million people live in the greater Tokyo area so it is (...

35million people live in the greater Tokyo area so it is (obviously) a very busy city. There is however lots to see and do, getting around it easy thanks to the excellent public transport system. NB, you might need to pay attention at some of the subway stations as they often have a complex system of subterranean tunnels leading to multiple exits and entrances. Day trips away from the city give you a feel for other parts of the country and is a great way to have a break from the city. Think carefully about the expected weather and public holidays when planning your visit. I would not want to be in a city during the hot summer. It's a 14hr direct flight from London so if you are able I would seriously consider splashing out on a seat better than standard economy.

Tokyo is one of my favorite places to visit in the world.

Tokyo is one of my favorite places to visit in the world. I love Japanese culture, history, and the food. There are so many great restaurants and great places to shop! I'm a big fan of vintage shopping and I love going to Koenji and Shimokitazawa. I also love bigger retailers like GU, Uniqlo, and Beams. Taking the subway can be a bit confusing. I think Tokyo can learn a bit from Seoul's subway system and provide more clear signage throughout the station and platforms, along with more maps. I hope that the Tokyo city government gets a handle on the overtourism issue. I lived in Korea for 13 years and would travel to Japan once or twice a year. I noticed the large influx of tourists after the pandemic, particularly streamers and influencers. As westerner, I think that the police, businesses, and local authorities need to crack down on some of these individuals, and have stricter policies/consequences on how these individuals conduct themselves in public. Especially the ones being a nuisance to locals and other tourists. I hope that the local authorities will be able to get a handle on the numbers of tourists in certain areas. I avoid a lot of the popular areas and attractions because being stuck in huge crowds and queues is just uncomfortable.

Tokyo is a massive city, so best to focus on a few neighborhoods only. We spent half a day near Roppongi. Highly recommend the teamlab exhibits! We spent a day in Shinjuku, one in Shibuya and one in Central Tokyo. There was a lot we didn't get to see, but a few days was enough for us.

Tokyo was a lot of fun and there's plenty to do, though it depends what you're into. I enjoy the process of travelling and finding new things, especially natural places to walk through (that includes nice gardens) and there's plenty of that but the big crowds and the immense urban sprawl can be wearing after a while. For me, three days in Tokyo came at the end of a two week trip where I started in Hokkaido and worked my way south and that worked out well. Lots of people going to Japan for the first time may use Tokyo as a base and go out/come back in each day and this can work well, but be prepared for big crowds at most places you would like to go. Those with social anxiety or travelling with young children may have a tougher time. Having said that, getting around isn't difficult and you can set your watch to the trains, they're that reliable. Finding places to eat is easy and it's excellent for shopping and sightseeing.

Smooth check-in with advance notice of all info needed for arrival and check in, easy to find the location and no hassle to check in with access code. New facility and kept very clean. And I like the decoration in particular, home feel, and the hotel operator is very responsive, answering all my queries timely. Very helpful. Hotel is only 4m walk to the nearest station and easy commute to Shinjuku, Shibuya, etc. Will come back for sure for my next trip to Tokyo.

Very good hotel in an excellent location linking Shinjuku and Harujuku / Shibuya either by walking or by train. Located on the southern side of Shinjuku Station meant you were close to main attractions but in a quieter spot. Short walks to main shrines and gardens/parks in area but also easy access to rest of Tokyo. We spent seven nights here and it is ideal.

The location is perfect, close to the subway and several direct lines. If you plan to explore Shinjuku or Shibuya this is a great find (good value). I wouldn't say this is a hotel, more of an apartment to yourself. The staff is amazing and super quick to respond if you have questions or issues. Note, this is an unmanned hotel (everything is digital)
