Kiev Pechersk Lavra

The Lavra was founded in the XI century by the monk Anthony and his disciple Theodosius. An Orthodox monastery founded in the 11th century on the site of a former pagan temple where rites in honour of Perun, Svarog, Khors and other deities of the ancient Slavic pantheon were performed. The first church on the site of the future monastery was made of wood. At the beginning of the XII century, in honour of the victory over the Polovtsians, the laying of the Cathedral of Archangel Michael began, at which the monastery was established. On the square in front of the church there is a sculptural group consisting of monuments to Princess Olga, Cyril and Methodius, and the Apostle Andrew.

The facade is decorated with arched windows and openwork stucco, the main entrance doors depict Prince Vladimir and Princess Olga, the inner vaults are painted with bright thematic frescoes, which were worked on by M. Vrubel, V. Vasnetsov, M. Nestorov and other famous painters.

The temple-museum was built by the will of Yaroslav the Wise in the 11th century. The cathedral was repeatedly attacked and destroyed: in the XIII century it was plundered by Batyi’s hordes, in the XIV century it was besieged by Uniates, and centuries later – by Crimean Tatars. The temple survived and in the XVII century work on its restoration began. In the 90s the building was included in the UNESCO heritage list, so religious services on its territory have almost ceased. The only exception is religious holidays.

St Nicholas Church was built for ten years solely on private capital.

According to an ancient legend, to which the “Tale of Bygone Years” refers, on this place the Apostle Andrew the First-Called put a cross and proclaimed that here was to be a great city. Several centuries later, Kyiv was founded.

Andriivs'kyi descent

A street in the centre of Kyiv, which appeared in the historical period of Kyivan Rus. In distant times it connected the Upper and Lower Town. The official date of Andriyivsky Descent is 1711, when by order of the governor the passage between Andriyivska and Zamkova Hill was widened. The passage became suitable not only for passengers, but also for carriages, horse riders and carts pulled by oxen.

Presumably, the castle was built for rent, later it was purchased by the Orlov family. There have always been sinister rumours about the castle. Allegedly, he often changed owners because of the fact that inside dwelt unclean force. But later the legend was debunked, as bottle necks were found in the walls, producing an ominous howl.

An elegant mansion in the Venetian style, located in the Pechorsky Lipok neighbourhood. The building was erected in the early 20th century according to the project of engineers M. Verbitsky and A. Kobelev. Italian sculptor E. Salya was in charge of the façade panelling. During construction, many innovative solutions were tried out, including electric lighting and a steam central heating system.

Khreschatyk Street

There was a large market where folk festivities were held on holidays. Sophia Square

One of the oldest city squares in Kyiv. It is believed that this is the place where Yaroslav the Wise defeated the Pechenegs in the 11th century. On the square there is a monument to the great hetman Bogdan Khmelnitsky – a fighter against Polish and Turkish invaders. The commander is depicted on horseback in a courageous heroic pose. Another architectural attraction is the stone bell tower of St Sophia Cathedral, built in the early XVIII century. In 1709, the triumphators of the Battle of Poltava met here.

Kontraktova Square

BULGAKOVA MUSEUM

The house-museum is located on Andriyivsky Spusk in the historical centre of Kyiv. The writer’s family lived there until 1919. The building got the name “House of Turbinykh” thanks to an article in a literary magazine in 1967. That is, the house became a refuge for Bulgakov’s family and the heroes of one of his works – the Turbinykh family. The exposition was opened in 1991; the collection was based on the private collection of the museum’s first director A. Konchakovsky.

A complex of fortifications on the right bank of the Dnieper River. It includes several earthen fortifications, citadels, household and administrative buildings. The history of the fortress goes back to the 5th century. At that time there was a fortified ancient settlement on Starokyivskaya Hill. After the devastating campaign of Batu Khan to Russia in the XIII century, the buildings fell into disrepair. The Kyiv fortress regained its military importance during the Russian-Swedish war of 1700-1721.

Ukrainian Motherland Monument

The monument is part of the memorial complex dedicated to the history of WWII (official name – Museum of the History of Ukraine in World War II). It is one of the largest expositions in Ukraine.
