An ancient city, the capital of Kyivan Rus, the cradle of Slavic culture – Kyiv will greet the tourist with thousand-year-old temples and monasteries, elegant European squares and, without a doubt, a bubbling stream of historical events. This is the place where statehood was forged and the pillars of the Russian Orthodox faith were established, where History continues its bizarre chronicle even now.
Kyiv is constantly becoming a venue for various musical and sporting events of European level. Many national festivals are also held here, especially in summer time. Tourists will be interested to visit Vyshyvanka Day, dedicated to the traditional costume, or walk along Khreshchatyk on the City Day, merging with a relaxed crowd of cheerful Kyiv citizens.
One of the first monasteries of Kyivan Rus, a revered and important Orthodox shrine. The monastery is included in the UNESCO heritage list. The Lavra was founded in the XI century by the monk Anthony and his disciple Theodosius. The architectural complex of the Kyiv-Pechora Lavra includes several churches, a spiritual seminary, cave monasteries, the State Library of Ukraine and a museum complex. The Lavra houses the relics of God’s holy saints.
Catholic cathedral, where the House of Organ and Chamber Music was organised in the 1980s. In 2001, the church was honoured by the visit of Pope John Paul II himself. The church was built in the style of classical Gothic in the early XX century. Until then there was only one Catholic church in Kyiv, which could not accommodate all comers. St Nicholas Church was built for ten years solely on private capital.
A mid-18th century Baroque temple located on a hill in the historical part of Kyiv. It is considered one of the most beautiful churches in Kyiv. According to an ancient legend, to which the “Tale of Bygone Years” refers, on this place the Apostle Andrew the First-Called put a cross and proclaimed that here was to be a great city. Several centuries later, Kyiv was founded.
A street in the centre of Kyiv, which appeared in the historical period of Kyivan Rus. In distant times it connected the Upper and Lower Town. The passage became suitable not only for passengers, but also for carriages, horse riders and carts pulled by oxen.
The alley created in the 80s of the XX century as part of a large-scale project to build a historical architectural reserve “Ancient Kyiv”. The plans remained on paper, and the Landscape Alley remained the only completed object. The observation deck near the Historical Museum offers a panoramic view of the Dnieper and Podol. Since 2009, a children’s park has been organised within the alley.
One of the oldest city squares in Kyiv. It is believed that this is the place where Yaroslav the Wise defeated the Pechenegs in the 11th century. On the square there is a monument to the great hetman Bogdan Khmelnitsky – a fighter against Polish and Turkish invaders. The commander is depicted on horseback in a courageous heroic pose. Another architectural attraction is the stone bell tower of St Sophia Cathedral, built in the early XVIII century. In 1709, the triumphators of the Battle of Poltava met here.
The square has been known since ancient times as a place for contract fairs (hence the name). Until the middle of the XIX century it was considered the centre of Kyiv. It is home to several popular Kyiv sights: the early 19th century hotel courtyard, the contract house, the Church of Our Lady of Pirohoshchy, the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, the Samson fountain and other buildings.
The National Opera Theatre of Ukraine, the largest and most famous in the country. It is a real architectural jewel of Kyiv. At the end of the XIX century, such works as “Eugene Onegin”, “Queen of Spades” by I. Tchaikovsky, “Aleko” by S. Rachmaninov, “Snegurochka” by N. Rimsky-Korsakov (maestros were personally present at the productions) were performed at the opera house. The great Russian reformer P. A. Stolypin was assassinated in the theatre.
The house-museum is located on Andriyivsky Spusk in the historical centre of Kyiv. The writer’s family lived there until 1919. The building got the name “House of Turbinykh” thanks to an article in a literary magazine in 1967. That is, the house became a refuge for Bulgakov’s family and the heroes of one of his works – the Turbinykh family. The exposition was opened in 1991; the collection was based on the private collection of the museum’s first director A. Konchakovsky.
A complex of fortifications on the right bank of the Dnieper River. It includes several earthen fortifications, citadels, household and administrative buildings. The history of the fortress goes back to the 5th century. At that time there was a fortified ancient settlement on Starokyivskaya Hill. After the devastating campaign of Batu Khan to Russia in the XIII century, the buildings fell into disrepair. The Kyiv fortress regained its military importance during the Russian-Swedish war of 1700-1721.
An architectural monument of the 11th century, the remains of fortifications of ancient Kyiv. The gates were first mentioned in the Tale of Bygone Years. They performed not so much a defensive function as a ceremonial entrance to the city. The construction used burnt bricks and binding mortar made of slaked lime, which ensured the durability and good preservation of the structure.
The ravine between the urban districts of Syrets and Lukyanivka, where the German invaders massacred the population in 1941. For a short period of time tens of thousands of Kyiv citizens were killed here and buried in mass graves, the total number of victims exceeds 100 thousand people. Nowadays, within the territory of Babi Yar there are memorials dedicated to the numerous victims of the shootings.
The city park on Mikhailovskaya Gora. There is a monument to Prince Vladimir, the Baptist of Russia. Thanks to the monument, the place got the name “Vladimirskaya Gorka”. Along the slope of the mountain there are three levels of the park: lower, upper and middle terraces. From here you can enjoy an excellent panorama of the city neighbourhoods.
