About Siena

Picturesque Siena is one of the most beautiful cities in Italy. It is located in the blessed land of Tuscany, a unique gastronomic region where many delicacies of Italian cuisine and dozens of varieties of excellent wine originate. Siena is surrounded by fertile landscapes that have been protected by UNESCO for their exclusivity.

The city’s streets, squares, palazzos and ancient temples are centuries of history set in stone. Since the Middle Ages, the Palio horse races have been held in Siena. To this day, they still take place according to a ritual established centuries ago. This event attracts a huge number of tourists to the city every year, who fill all the free space of the Piazza del Campo.

Excursion to Siena is included in most of the tourist itineraries on which “package travellers” are taken. Independent tourists also enjoy visiting this amazing island of the Middle Ages, which has preserved its unique flavour.

The fact is that its construction took into account the possibility of a military clash with the neighbouring Republic of Florence. In the event of war, the basilica could be used as a shelter and a place to withstand a siege.
