Kerkyra was founded by the Greeks in the 8th century BC. In its long history it has changed masters many times. The city was owned by the Roman and Byzantine Empires, the Venetian Republic, the Ottoman Turks, the French and the British. In the early 19th century, for seven years, Kerkyra was under the protectorate of the Russian Empire. Since 2007, the city centre has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List for its special architectural value.

Old Fortress of Corfu

A Venetian fort built between the 15th and 16th centuries on the foundations of an 8th century Byzantine fortress. At the foot of the hill on which the fortification stands, the Church of St George, decorated with Doric columns, was built. The church was already built under the British in the 19th century. Many of the fortress’s buildings, such as the palace of the Venetian governor and some churches, have not survived to this day.

New Venetian Fortress

Another Venetian fortress built in the 16th century to strengthen the defence line of Corfu. It was subsequently completed by the British and French. Neo Frurio is located at the top of St Mark’s Hill. Nowadays, part of the premises is used as offices for the seaport, while the other part is open to the public. The fortress has a small gallery where exhibitions are sometimes organised.

Liston - Eleftherias Street

The street was laid out in 1807-14. The architects I. Parmesan and M. de Lesseps worked on the project. It was created in the image of the Parisian “promenades” characteristic of the French capital. The Achilleion Palace

The palace complex was built in 1890 at the behest of the Austrian Empress Amalia Elisabeth of Bavaria. Corfu was Elisabeth’s favourite holiday destination, where she often escaped from the hated and pompous Vienna. After the Empress’ death, the palace became the residence of Kaiser Wilhelm II. By his decree, the interiors were renovated. Nowadays, the palace is home to a museum.

Corfu Museum of Asian Art

The palace was built in 1819-24 for the British Governor of the Ionian Islands. It was the seat of the local senate and the headquarters of the knightly order of St George. The complex is built in classical style. Its facade is decorated with a long row of Ionic columns. Today, the palace houses the Museum of Asian Art, which houses the extensive collection of the diplomat G. Manos, who collected it during his extensive travels in Asia.

Mouse Island

A small island with the official name “Pontikonisi”, located south of Corfu. There is a legend that it is the ship of Odysseus, which was turned to stone by the angry god Poseidon. The place has been nicknamed “Mouse Island” because of its tiny size. The island can easily be walked around in a few minutes. There are boat trips from Corfu to Pontikonisi. Some tourists prefer to reach the place by swimming.

Holy Monastery of Panagia Vlacherna

An Orthodox monastery dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries, founded by the pious Tsilibaris family. During the 20th century the monastery was a female monastery, after a short period of decline it was reborn as a male monastery in 2005 by decree of the President of Greece. The monastery is located on a small island in the neighbourhood of Mouse Island. It is connected to the mainland by a narrow isthmus. The monastery houses the venerated icon of the Mother of God of Blachernae.

A 17th century monastery for men, located in the picturesque western part of Corfu. It is situated on the top of a promontory surrounded on three sides by the waters of the Ionian Sea. The monastery was built on the site of an old ruined monastery of 1225. Within its walls are kept the icon of Skopietissa (Paleokastritsa) and the icon of the Assumption of the Mother of God. Not far from the monastery complex there is a winery, a museum of icons and an olive oil factory.

Holy Church of Saint Spyridon

The church is located amongst the historic neighbourhoods of Kerkyra, right in the heart of the Old Town. Quite a lot of funds for the development of the church were donated by the Russian Empress Catherine II. The temple has always been considered one of the most luxurious in the Ionian Islands. Its interior is richly decorated with frescoes of the XVII-XVIII centuries in the Italian style. The relics of St Spyridon, the patron saint of Corfu, are kept in the cathedral.

The British Cemetery

Corfu was under British protectorate from 1815-64. As the British belonged to the Anglican Church, they needed their own necropolis, which was organised almost immediately after the island came under British rule. The oldest graves date back to 1817. Soldiers who took part in the world wars and representatives of the British administration are buried in the British Cemetery.

Angelokastro

The structure is an important monument of the Byzantine era in Corfu. It was erected in the early 13th century. From the 14th century the fortress was owned by the Republic of Venice. During the Ottoman siege, Angelokastro withstood the onslaught despite its small garrison. The fortress has survived to this day in fairly good condition. Since 2009, the fortress has been open to the public.

Kassiopi Castle was founded on the ruins of a Roman fortification during the Byzantine era. Later the Venetians did a good job of fortifying the fortress. The structure is located on a promontory. It is clearly visible from the harbour.
