About Denmark

Denmark is an island country. It has many excellent holiday resorts that are popular in Europe. It includes more than 400 islands, and Greenland and the Faroes have autonomous status.

Another “”country”” that has autonomous status is right in Copenhagen. Several neighbourhoods wished to secede from Denmark, and declared their own republic – Christiania. After a long confrontation, the hipsters were left alone. Today this place is a tourist exotic, a little piece of Amsterdam.

Thanks to the efforts of the current monarchy, about 600 castles, palaces and fortresses have been preserved on the territory of Denmark. They are characterised by richness and opulence in exteriors and interiors. In the architecture of buildings there is almost all the existing variety of styles. The country has rich art galleries, collections of sculptures, a huge number of museums. Sometimes there are embodied ideas of modernists of modernity, carrying forward to centuries ahead. Visit the Red Square in Copenhagen or the ARoS Museum.

Nyhavn

4.7/5
4985 reviews
The old harbour of Nyhavn is called the heart of Copenhagen. The colourful houses on the quay remember G.H. Andersen, who lived in almost every one of them. Nowadays, rooms are rented not only in the houses, but also in medieval ships moored in the harbour. The street is full of various souvenir shops and cafes.

Grenen Camping A/S

4.1/5
988 reviews
Denmark’s northernmost point is famous for being the meeting point of the two seas, the Baltic and the North Sea. To see the visible border, you have to walk along the spit, often through sandy snowstorms. Swimming in this place is strictly forbidden due to strong currents. In the 15th century a lighthouse was built on the shore, which is still active. Another attraction of this place is a church warning to those who build their house on sand instead of stone. The whole floor of this building was covered with sand and the parishioners abandoned it.
Right now place is temporarily closed.

Church of Our Saviour

4.6/5
6939 reviews
The Church of Christ the Saviour is easily recognisable by the unusual appearance of the tower, which looks something like a cake. Gradually, the steps leading from inside come outwards in the form of a spiral-shaped, gilded staircase. At the top, a spire with a sphere and a four-metre high statue of Christ shines. The Saviour holds a banner in his hand. This is the main church of Copenhagen, which, among other things, is unique with a 17th century organ and a carillon of 48 bells.

ARoS Aarhus Art Museum

4.5/5
11923 reviews
One of the most unusual panoramas offered by the authors and staff of the art museum is to look at the city through the multicoloured panes of the rainbow halo above the roof of the building. ARoS is a major installation centre for creative experiments by contemporary artists. A five-metre sculpture of a squatting boy by artist Ron Mueck has become a kind of business card of the museum.

4.6/5

The two towers of this magnificent cathedral have always attracted Danish artists who painted views of Denmark. The temple has become a repository of the spirit and history of the Danes, where the country’s monarchs have been buried for almost a thousand years. Many tombs are real works of art. The first wooden church on this place, according to the evidence of found runes, was built by the first king of Denmark Harold the Blue-Toothed back in the Viking times. The cathedral has preserved carved pews from the 15th century, a skilful altar and bas-reliefs.

In the small town of Billund, the Danes have created a wonderland – LegoLand. Every child has heard about it at least once in his life and dreamed of going there. The park occupies 100 000 square metres and consists of 8 zones. For its construction the creators needed about 50 million cubes. For the youngest children there is a Duplo zone with a soft surface. There is a steam train running through the fairyland, a children’s driving school and a functioning fire station, which is also made of lego-cubes.

The first written record of Denmark as a state was found on rune stones in the white-washed church in Ellinga. Scholars date the inscriptions on the stones to 955. The large stone was erected by King Horus in honour of his wife Tyra, and the second one by his son Harold, who baptised Denmark. The stones are now dressed in glass sarcophagi to preserve them from destruction.

The oldest amusement park in 1538 was established in the market square of Klampenborg at the Royal Reindeer Park. Today, the organisers are trying to keep it in the style and spirit of the Middle Ages. As centuries ago, the audience is amused by Pierrot’s tricks and circus performers. You can ride a bicycle to see the reindeer grazing in the Deer Park. Admission is free.

The Little Mermaid

4.1/5
24861 reviews
The symbol of Copenhagen and the whole of Denmark is the city’s beloved Little Mermaid from Andersen’s fairy tale. Few people are unfamiliar with the sad yet life-affirming story of this touching heroine. In 2013, it was 100 years since she arrived at the harbour. Edward Eriksen made the sculpture especially for beer king Karl after His Majesty was impressed by the theatre production of the same name.

Round churches and windmills have become the island’s calling card.

Møns Klint

4.7/5
2482 reviews
The white cliffs of the island, reflecting, dilute the blue of the sea. It seems that the artist has outlined Men with blue paint. The precipitous shores stretch for 6 kilometres and rise to a height of 128m. The highest place is called the Queen’s Throne. The island is favoured by swallows and swans. There are 20 species of orchids growing freely here, which are protected by local laws.

The Aarhus Botanical Garden is an open-air museum city. The creators brought old houses from all over Denmark and recreated them in great detail. Cobbled narrow streets, a mint, a harbour, mills, workshops that operate and offer to buy products, “residents” dressed in period clothing – it’s as if you are transported to the distant past….

Faroe Islands

18 islands have autonomous status in Denmark. All of them are of volcanic origin. Picturesque pictures of green hills, shaggy sheep grazing, houses with green grass roofs – it is hard to imagine a more idyllic picture. Even the roofs of concert halls have grass growing on them. Residents raise sheep and fish. The only thing that spoils the impression of the Faroese is the bloody dolphin-killing festivities.
