History, Good Food and the Golden Coast
Tarragona is located on the sunny ‘Costa Daurada‘, in southern Catalonia. With an inheritance dating back to local tribes, Carthaginians and Romans, it is today a vibrant cultural and economic centre. Don’t miss the ‘human towers’ during Tarragona’s Santa Tecla Festival, but check your hotel availability for the area with enough time in advance.
The ‘human towers’ became so popular all across Catalonia that they can be visited throughout the year at the festival centre ‘Casa de la Festa’. Try the local seafood dishes in El Serrallo fishing district, and don’t miss the wines from the area.
The city was an important provincial capital during Roman times and includes several UNESCO World Heritage sites, with the seaside amphitheatre from the 2nd century being the most relevant. The 12th-century Cathedral of St Mary was built on the site of a former Jupiter temple and a Muslim mosque, and mixes Romanesque and Gothic styles.
Reus Airport is a few kilometres outside the city, while Barcelona El Prat Airport is 90 km away. Tarragona is located near Salou resort, and hotels in the area are also very popular. Beautiful city with ruins on display within the city buildings where the new Tarragona city sits. Roman Amphitheatre next to the beach with was also beautiful. Much more relaxed than Barcelona where we came from previously visiting which we appreciated. Plenty to see with its old city and Roman ruins.
Plenty to see with its old city and Roman ruins. Nice coffee shops in old squares to watch the world go by in. Also enjoyed the Starbucks-type places on the Rambla Nova. As an unexpected bonus got to see a Handel concert. Check out the classical music concert schedule for the Theatre on the Rambla Nova if interested.Guest review byDavid - Review score

Tarragona is worth a visit and also a great base for exploring other parts of Catalonia such as Reus The Roman ruins, the old city, the market, the restaurants are great attractions. You can catch the bus to many other parts of Catalonia from the cventral bus station and there is also the train. You can catch a bus directly to and from Barecelona airport. If just visiting Tarragona I would recommend 2 days to see the local attractions but more if you are visiting other parts of CataloniaGuest review byHollyAustralia - Review score

Tarragona is a lovely city about 90 minutes by train from Barcelona (and only a bit less than that by car). It still has some Roman-era structures and history. I visited the Amphitheatre, which has an interesting evolution through history. I also toured the Cathedral, which was lovely and an easy way to spend some time. Tarragona has a wonderful sense of history going back to before the birth of Christ. This sense was everywhere-- in the walls, the buildings, the views, the location....The area inside the walls (where we stayed) was especially incredible. It was largely pedestrianised and cobbled with ornate lamps lighting narrow, winding streets fronted by medieval, or even older buildings. All very clean, comfortable and well equipped, kitchen was small but we did not really cook much. Onsite (paid) parking and elevator were a bonus. Happy to recommend as a great base for exploring Tarragona and the sourrounding areas. We visted the Ebro Delta, Torredembarra and Cornudella de Monsant in the mountains. Lots of towels which makes a change from the usual just 1 each. 4 minute walk to Arrabassada beach - the nicest beach in Tarragona. 20 minute walk to city centre or bus stop across the road. Although there is a local bus service into Tarragona city centre a car is recommended to fully explore the local area. Be prepared to share the Villa with other guests.
