Sofia is the Bulgarian capital and its largest city, situated at the foot of Vitosha Mountain in the very center of the Balkan Peninsula. With a variety of architectural styles, picturesque scenery and easy access to outdoor activities, this city is a definite must-see!
From well-preserved city walls built in the 7th century BC through to the early Medieval buildings. From the 4th-century Rotunda St. George and 10th-century Boyana Church with its stunning 13th-century frescoes to Socialist-era monumental constructions, Sofia is a real treat for history lovers.
Most of the popular landmarks are located in the Oborishte district, the most central part of the city featuring plenty of greenery, cobbled streets and the most popular landmark, the Neo-Byzantine Alexander Nevsky Cathedral.
Sofia has plenty of natural sites too, including the renowned thermal and mineral springs, the primary reason Thracians established the city here before the 7th century BC. Enjoy a walk in the most popular parks, the Borisova gradina or the impressive Vitosha Nature Park with more than 6,500 acres within the city limits.
From hiking to skiing on the Vitosha and from sightseeing to relaxing in mineral springs, Sofia has plenty of fun for everyone! On Booking.com you can find nearly 190 properties in the city, from 5-star central accommodations to convenient hotels near Sofia Airport.

We spent one day wandering the city centre seeing the amazing churches, the excavations of the previous churces/temples below the old St Sofia church were of particular interest and the Alexander Nevski Cathedral and the Russian church are both spectacular.
Our second day was a day tour to Skopje in North Macedonia, a very interesting and welcoming place with Mother Teresas museum and lots of spectacular statues and buildings built in the old classical style following the massive earthquake in 1963, the only unsettling thing was the tour bus drivers travelling well over speed limits
Our third day was the tour to the must see Rila Monastery, no photos do this place justice, we also went to the St Ivan cave which is a bit of a stony hike but doable and is interesting.
We both enjoyed Sofia very much - beware of taxi rip offs.

I went for two weeks and had been there before. This time I did Mount Vitosha hike, easy to get to public transit and in June nice cool respite day, day trip to Plovdiv, excellent rose valley and 5 other stops 10 hour day trip - easily in the top three day trips of many I’ve done, Rila tour and free walking tour excellent, Sophia is both delightful and profound, learn the Cyrillic alphabet (takes no time) before you go, makes it easier and so fun!

We went on two "free" walking tours that were excellent and provided us with a considerable amount of knowledge about Sofia and Bulgaria in general as well as orientation to the city. The meeting spot was a short distance from the Art Hotel 158.
We also took a tour to Rila which was outstanding.

A lovely walk-able , extremely friendly/safe city.
A lovely walk-able , extremely friendly/safe city. The architecture is something to behold a mixture of Soviet Russian / Ottoman Empire!! Beautiful churches and cathedrals with the odd mosque thrown in. Entrance fees are reasonable and the museums are well laid out with enough English to understand what is going on - somewhat less English here than other European Capitals. If you buy traditional Bulgarian food expect it to be , for our tastes at least, extremely very too much SALTY and we had to leave the food uneaten. We tried the local food a couple of times and it is obviously normal for locals. Also be aware that place like McDonalds , KFC etc. are there but the prices are silly - more expensive here than in Amsterdam which we did not expect. The streets are busy and vibrant but the city does get going until 10am (most places are closed until then) so a relaxed start to the day (plenty do open Sunday but a lot of attractions are closed Monday).

I like Sofia, not only because I'm BULGARIAN but has everything over there. Specifically I'll recommended the Boyana Church - they said the same is Angel's drawing. And always I bought banitza for breakfast and I have lutenitza in the diner meal.

The Hotel was right in the middle of the city, just 7' from the parliament of Bulgaria. The room was amazing, realy clean, organised and modern, equiped with the latest technology that every hotel should have (touchscreen for heating- do not disturb sign ect. The bed was confortable and there was a flat screen tv ready to be controlled through our smartphone, thus watching whatever we want through our acounts of netflix and yt.
I recomend this hotel more than i have recomended any another!!!
I booked the hotel for my mother and father in law, they were visiting Bulgaria for first time! They really liked the hotel,it was very clean and very good looking, they loves the way it was made so artsy and contemporary,so cozy and comfortable! The costumer service was excellent, the guy on the desk was very patient with us!I will definitely book this hotel again!
Good location for us. Big room - we chose a suite on the top floor - one large space with double and twin sofa bed. Staff spoke a little English. Comparing with other Bulgarian accommodation we've experienced, it was fairly good (not comparing with hotels in Western Europe)
The best apartment in Sofia, practical in the city center with every comfort, the owners are two fantastic people very kind and available for every request. If one day I had to return to Bulgaria I would definitely choose El Apartment
The location is fantastic. At the good part of the center. The rooms are clean and comfortable. Nice breakfast. We even got coffee and completely water and soda in the room (not common in Bulgaria).
