A French and Flemish Chocolate Box
A few miles from the Belgian border, Lille displays Flemish influence in both architecture and cuisine. Its most famous square - Grand Place - is home to the beautiful Vielle Borse building, the Lille Christmas markets and several restaurants serving moules-frites and local beer.
Behind that is the Palais Rihour, a rather odd-looking building surrounded by cafes. In the opposite direction is another square with the opera house at the center and triangular-shaped buildings fanning off in 3 directions. One of these cobbled streets leads to the Old Town, where boutiques and international brands are in beautifully crafted shops.
Shopping in Lille is actually epic. It has Europe’s largest bookstore (the 8-floor Furet du Nord) and largest flea market - the Braderie de Lille. Then there is the bustling Wazemmes market and the huge Euralille shopping center. The town also has some fantastic chocolate shops.
Other attractions include the Musée des Beaux-Arts and the Citadelle – a 17th-century fortress surrounded by a free zoo and gardens.
Lesquin Airport is on the city’s outskirts, but most visitors arrive at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport, named after Lille’s most famous son. If traveling to Lille by Eurostar, check out the mural of famous European landmarks before heading to your Booking.com hotel, B&B or apartment.

Lille has a very good integrated transport system so it was not necessary to use the car at all. One and two day passes for example, are available to buy at machines in any metro station and are excellent value for money. We used the buses, the Metro and the Navette to investigate Old Lille, We really loved a restaurant called Les Deux Rives in Wazemmes. Exquisite food at super prices. Turn right out of the metro at Wazemmes on Rue d'Iena, number 49. A warm welcome, no pretensions but be warned soft drinks only. We travelled to Lille to watch Le Tour and had a brilliant time in this easily walkable beautiful city with lovely old buildings, lovely museums, wonderful restaurants especially Las Tapas and great places to eat and drink. There's plenty to do and see in Lille but it's also a great place to stay if you want to explore further. I think that if I were young enough to take another tilt at Europe from Australia, I would not come to France again. Lille was just OK, and we used Lille as a step-off place to two gems: First La Piscine - Musee d'Art et d'Industrie in Roubaix. This was a revelation with a wonderful collection. Second, a visit to the Australian War Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux. A wonderful, sombre excursion stuffed up only by two cancelled pre-booked taxi rides (Allocabs) that badly threw out much of the train coordination to make it a day excursion. The planned early afternoon return to Lille ended up at 6.30 and half a day wasted. But the experience at the War Memorial far exceeded the trials of getting there and back. As for Lille itself: great Metro, train station staff were great. Stained glass windows in St Maurice Church were wonderful, Other standard tourist features were as expected, but nothing exceptional. Too hard to find an early evening meal. Apart from the above, I would not recommend Lille as a destination.Guest review byAnonymous - 10.0

Loved Lille!
Loved Lille! Arrived Friday at noon and departed Sunday at noon. Had I not had reservations in another town to continue my trip I would have tried to extend my stay through Sunday at least. Lille is a lovely small city that was a treat to walk around, shop, visit the art museum, and enjoy the amazing French bakeries. It was easy to walk around and my hotel was an easy walk to the train station. As a woman traveling alone, I felt very safe. I highly recommend a visit!Guest review byAnonymous

As a former convention, the building is beautiful. I booked a superior twin room which was large and comfortable. The beds are comfy and bathroom had a good shower. It was particularly helpful that this Hotel has parking; a rare thing in a city hotel in the historic centre. The breakfast was good and had everything we wanted.
