About Nessebar

Nessebar is one of the oldest towns in Bulgaria. It was founded by the Thracians long before our era and was a Greek, Roman and Byzantine colony. In the XV century the settlement came under the protectorate of the Ottoman Turks.

As a tourist centre, the city began to develop only in the XX century. Today it has everything for a quiet family holiday: cosy beaches, ancient architecture, hospitable taverns and cafes, souvenir shops with products of local craftsmen.

Nowadays it has turned into a modern resort, annually receiving hundreds of thousands of tourists from different European countries.

Old Town Nessebar

The old quarters of the town are located on a small peninsula connected to the new part of Nessebar by a bridge. The first Thracian colony was founded here in the 10th century BC. Then the Romans, Byzantines and Turks ruled the territory of Bulgaria. The best preserved buildings in the Old Town are those with foundations built during the Ottoman period and those dating back to the 18th century.

The Windmill, Nessebar

The mill is located on the isthmus between the Old Town and the modern part of Nessebar. The structure itself is made of wood and is reinforced on a stone base left from a Byzantine church. The mill is considered a symbol of the town and is often visited by tourists during their walks. It consists of three floors: the first floor is where the flour was stored, the second floor is where the miller’s family lived, and the third floor is where the millstone mechanisms were located.

Fortification Walls

The western wall is all that remains of the city’s once powerful defence system. A small section of the fortification stretches for about 100 metres, with a height of 8 metres. The surrounding area is landscaped and well-maintained, so it is a pleasant place to walk and enjoy the view of the surroundings. It is believed that the wall was built during the Early Middle Ages and has been restored several times.

Nesebar Archaeological Museum

The Museum of Archaeology is located at the entrance to the Old Town. It was opened in 1994. The impressive exhibition occupies four floors and consists of objects from the Thracian, Roman and Byzantine historical periods. Here visitors can see collections of icons, crockery, jewellery, coins, ship accessories, as well as statues (or rather what remains of them) and ancient funerary slabs.

Ethnographic Museum

The exposition is located in a 19th century city manor house, formerly owned by a wealthy merchant. Each room of the house is dedicated to a different theme. Furniture, household items, craftsmen’s tools, household utensils, clothes, textiles and many other interesting exhibits relating to the life and culture of local residents are exhibited here. Folklore groups often perform on the street in front of the museum during holidays.

Pirates of the Caribbean - mini waterpark
