About Burgas

Although Bourgas is not considered to be the most popular resort in Bulgaria, holidays here are no worse than in other parts of the coast. The city has a couple of equipped beaches, a lot of hotels for every taste and quite interesting sights.

Every year Burgas hosts several international festivals dedicated to theatre and music. From April to September, the city turns into the cultural capital of the country, which attracts travellers from all over Europe.

First of all, tourists will be interested in visiting the Archaeological and Ethnographic Museums, the Seaside Park, ancient Roman and Thracian settlements. It is also worth taking a boat trip to St Anastasia Island and walking along the picturesque city pier in the evening.

Seaside Park

The park stretches along the Black Sea coast for 7 kilometres. Its territory features observation platforms, well-maintained flowerbeds, strolling alleys and fountains. You can go down the steps to the sea itself. The park has everything for a pleasant pastime: bicycle paths, comfortable benches, children’s playgrounds, cafes, a summer theatre, a mini zoo and even a casino. Among the numerous monuments there is a monument dedicated to Alexander Pushkin.

Central Beach Burgas

The beach is located near the Seaside Park. The sand here has a pleasant yellowish colour and the water is almost always clear, despite the proximity of the harbour. There is also a pier, famous throughout Europe, which is a favourite place for romantic evening strolls. Pleasure boats moor here and fishermen can often be seen sitting with fishing rods.

Sand figure festival

Since 2008, a festival has been held in Burgas, during which visitors can look at bizarre sand figures created by participants from different countries. Each time the exhibition is dedicated to a particular theme: fairytale characters, famous personalities, film characters or animals. An incredible amount of sand is brought to the site to create the compositions.

Kilometre zero

A marking in the form of a compass that precisely defines the geographical centre of the city. It appeared in 2011 and was immediately loved by residents. They affectionately nicknamed the zero kilometre “the navel of the city”. The landmark is located on Aleksandrovskaya Street. It is a slab with relief ornamentation. All distances to any place in Burgas are counted from the zero kilometre.

Archaeological Museum Burgas

The exposition is located in the building of the former gymnasium, built at the end of the 19th century, designed by Swiss master H. Mayer. The collection contains artefacts from the Thracian, Roman and Greek periods of the city’s history. The most valuable exhibits are a statue of Apollo from the ancient settlement of Antii and a 13th century BC tomb-dolmen found in the vicinity of Burgas Bay.

Ethnographic Museum Burgas

State Opera Burgas

Church Saints Cyril and Methodius

The temple was erected in the late XIX century to replace the old wooden church. The construction was financed by donations from the town’s residents. The project was developed by Italian architect R. Toscani. Probably, therefore, some elements of the building are rather characteristic for European Catholic churches than for the Orthodox cathedral. However, the outline of the dome clearly shows features of the Byzantine style.

Holy Cross

The church was erected in 1853, as evidenced by the inscription on its wall. However, according to some documents, the building appeared in 1808. During the Russo-Turkish War, Bulgarian and Russian soldiers were buried in this church. Today it is the spiritual centre of the Armenian community not only in Burgas, but also in the whole region. The structure was included in the list of cultural monuments in 1970.

Roman city of Deultum - Debelt

The ruins of a settlement from Roman times, located 17 kilometres from Burgas. The colony on this site was founded under Emperor Vespasian. Over the years, the settlement developed into one of the richest towns in the region. Deultum existed until the XIV century, after which it fell into decline and ceased to be mentioned in sources. Artefacts from the former colony are on display in the archaeological museum.

The mound is a fortified Thracian settlement. It is mentioned in ancient manuscripts under the name Thermopolis (Terma). The place is famous for its hot mineral springs. Philip of Macedon, Emperor Justinian and Suleiman the Magnificent visited “Akva Kalida”. Back in the time of the Thracians, there was a temple on the territory of the settlement, which attracted pilgrims from distant lands.

The Sea Garden

Nature Conservation Center Poda

St. Anastasia Island

An island in the Burgas Bay, located 6 km from the coastline. Its territory is shared by the Orthodox Church (it owns the church with the lighthouse) and a private company that owns a hotel and a restaurant. There is a lighthouse on the island. It is believed that in the XV century there was a monastery here. Recently the island has been developed as a tourist destination. People come here to breathe fresh air and admire the vast expanse of the sea.
